Gray Days

So things have been quiet around here lately. Maybe its the weather, or that I still feel like we're coming down from the holiday-high, or maybe even just because my mind has been busy chewing away at other things lately - I don't know, but I haven't felt like doing much lately. On my way home from work everyday I think about "How quickly can I get home and either get in bed with my book or cozy up on the couch to watch tv?". I've even gotten lazy with cooking - frozen pizza and frozen skillet meals have been the staple as of late. Pathetic!

I'm working on coming out of my funk though. Its been pretty the past couple of days and I'm trying to get out and run more - its my own personal form of therapy these days. I've also been doing a lot of "looking" for new fun things. I thought I'd share some of my latest internet finds.

First... Some new music for inspiration

Another find!

I vowed after living in Kuwait and becoming completely obsessed with their hummus, that I would learn to make it. I tried once - failed miserably - and have not tried again. I still have not given up hope though. Maybe I should try this recipe, I'm sure the more I practice the better it will get, right? Making my own chips flatbread chips seems a little overly ambitious, but Sweet Potato Hummus sounds delicious!

Phew! We just got home from our Christmas travels and are doing some quick laundry and unpacking before we re-pack and get on the road tomorrow to spend New Years with some very special friends.

I'm SO thankful that I have Monday off work so that I can attempt to break my personal record for hours spent on the couch as I recover from all of our merriment.

Snow Day

Its 3 days until Christmas and we're temporarily snowed in. The weather channel says that we got 4-6 inches last night and are expected to get about the same today... totaling about 1'. I believe they have been misinformed, however. We already had about 4 inches when I went to bed last night and it continued to snow all night long. Our neighborhood was plowed around 4 am this morning, and when I tried to go out at 6 I could hardly tell because it was up to my ankles again already. That's at least another 4 inches in 2 hours!

The thing about Denver though, is that they handle snow well. Snow doesn't stop these folks. So I wasn't sure if I should question my inner Texan that was urging me to go get back in bed and then later go out and buy mass amounts of canned food and toilet paper.

I decided to put on my big girl pants though (and my snow boots) and got in my car and decided I was going to be tough. After slip sliding my way through the neighborhood (which I had hoped was much worse than the main roads), I got to the entry of our development. There was a car already stuck in an embankment beside me. The roads were so covered in ice and snow that my car couldn't get traction and I couldn't see the lines on the road. SO I decided to be smart and return home. Hopefully I'm not the only one in the office that couldn't make it in....

I got bored last night and decided to take my dad's advice and play with the camera lens he got me that creates starbursts. I took the pictures above from our yard and of our tree. The first picture is of our neighbor's pine tree in their front yard. It's by far the best Christmas tree I've ever seen. I don't know them, but I kind of feel like I should go congratulate them. Its amazing. They used both small and large bulbs and you can't tell where any of the strands are. Not like our Charlie Brown trees with their snaking lights :)

Hope you're having a good day! I'm enjoying my snow day. I much prefer it over the "dust" days we had in Kuwait.

I'm ready, I swear!

We went snowboarding for the second time last weekend. Its slowly getting easier, but the muscle memory is definitely taking its sweet time coming back! I'm not terrible... I have the basics down... I'm just super slow and super cautious. My poor husband either has to ditch me or spend half the time waiting for me around every other bend.

We've been busy with all the Christmas prep and we had company in town last weekend which occupied a lot of out time. Now, for the last week of work and then 10 days off! We'll start by heading to Texas this weekend and then will start the new year in Nebraska with friends that are home from Kuwait (can't wait! ha, I'm a poet).

School is out, so my husband and I have switched rolls lately. He stays home and works out, walks the dog, and helps me with stuff around the house while I work. I'm LOVING the help :)

I'm done with all my Christmas shopping and now to come up with some New Years Resolutions.... So far I'm thinking:

1) Get outside more (this has been my resolution before, but went on hiatus when I was in Kuwait)

2) Keep things simple (I want the question of What's for Dinner? to be one of the hard ones for a while)

3) Continue to try to live for the moment. I've started asking myself Does this matter? or What would I REALLY like to be doing right now instead? Its been nice when I can remember :)

December: Week 1

Oh man, have I had a week...

It started last Wednesday with a family emergency that caused me to book a flight to Ohio the next day. My grandmother has unfortunately seen better days. I flew in to see her and to support my grandfather as he struggles with the reality of what may be. I got to spend some time with my family, which was a very nice & unexpected. I had been missing the days when we used to drive to Ohio and spend Christmas at my grandparents house when I was little. Unfortunately the reason that we were brought together, was not a happy one, but it was still nice to see family.

When I left Denver for Ohio last week it was snowing sideways. We were about 4" into the 8" the weather channel predicted. The freezing temperatures and off and on again snowing has continued to tonight (tomorrow its supposed to get up to 40 degrees, woohoo!!). My walks from my car to my work have been bone chilling! I got to break in my fancy new rubber boots though, that I bought recently!

I am catching up on sleep from being out of town and preparing to have company come into town next week. We have plenty of Christmas shopping left to do too!

We have all our decorations up though, as you saw in our last post. Here's a picture of our Christmas trees this year. The second is my Barbie tree. My Gramme has bought me a Barbie ornament every year since the 90's and this is how it looks today. My brother gets Lionel Train ornaments each year :) I think we'll spring for a full size tree next year, but for now our little ones do the trick.

I hope everyone is enjoying this time of year. Its my favorite, despite the cold!

As of Late

I've been slacking on my blogging lately. Our world feels a little more hectic now that I'm working, and I've been just trying to catch up. This four day Thanksgiving weekend has been WONDERFUL though. I've tried to savor every minute, but it has still gone by too fast. We celebrated our anniversary last week by going downtown Denver and seeing the Lion King on broadway. We have since been fairly hermit-like. We were able to get a bunch of stuff done, but of course not everything. I find that I need equal parts unproductivity to productivity :)

So anyways, here's a little glimpse at what's been going on at our house over the past month...

Halloween weekend the movers came with our stuff from Kuwait! It was completely overwhelming. Our little house is much smaller than our place in Kuwait and we had a lot of purging to do that didn't get done before we moved overseas. Its nice to have all our stuff in one place and we've organized/donated/put away a LOT but still have some odds and ends that need to find a home. Its always the miscellaneous stuff that's the hardest to find a place for. Its also tricky to find a balance of what to keep and what to toss because we have no idea what our next place will look like. Things that work in one spot wont work in the next.

I feel as though it doesn't look quite as messy when the photo is in black & white :)

Then it snowed for the second time this season in mid-November. We haven't gotten snow since, but the temperatures have stayed winter-ish ever since.

My husband and his giant tv... hanging this thing was a task in itself. I didn't help much, I'll admit. We're still working on a solution to the hanging wires, but they'll be gone soon. As you can see, we put up our Christmas decorations this weekend.

And last, my project over the Thanksgiving holiday, waxing our dining room table. Its a raw table, so we have to apply wax to seal it. I've never done this before and had kind of put it off in fear of ruining it. It turned out to be pretty easy though! We'll have to do it a couple more times, but round one is complete as of last night!

The bench leg on the right has had wax applied (and is still a little wet), the leg on the left is untreated. It added a little bit of richness to the wood.

Ta-Da! All done.

Snow Day

We went snowboarding today for the first time in a while and it kicked my butt! In fact... I have a bruised butt and knee to prove it! It was fun though and we got to check out Copper Mountain for the first time. It was weird to just go snowbaording with little to no prep. Usually when we go to the mountains its on a planned vacation. The only downside to just going on a whim, though, is that in order to miss the traffic you have to leave our house really early - like 6am on a Saturday early! I had to reward myself with a egg nog latte as incentive.

I need to seriously work on my snowboarding skills though, if this is going to be a regular thing. I was ready to curl into the fetal position (on the mountain or off the mountain - I didn't care at the time) after about 3 hours!

A friend posted this video on facebook and I thought it was kind of cool, hope you do too :)

Pendulum Waves

Week 1

So I survived my first week at my new job! It was a very tiring week, but overall it was good. I like the company so far, everyone seems nice. Its a very big company, so that will continue to be an adjustment for me, but I was able to hit the ground running and jump right in on some projects - which I'm thankful for. I hate that lull time when you first start a job and you don't really have much to do yet.

Denver seems to be a pretty cool city too. We went out to dinner last week in a cool little area called Highlands. It was all strung with christmas lights and there were shops, restaurants and bars all within walking distance down this cute little street. I'm looking forward to finding other cool little pockets like this.

The only major drawback to my situation so far, in my opinion, is the downtown parking. City-wide the parking is expensive and limited, it seems. I am not happy to have to pay for parking. I have an option of taking the bus into town, which I may try next month, but that only works if you're schedule is completely regular and you have no appointments, meetings, etc. I bought a month parking pass in a garage that I've been told by several people is the cheapest, and it cost $140! (grr) I don't know if this is going to be the answer or not, but needed to get it for now while I figured things out.

I'm loving all the holiday decorations downtown though. I don't mind my walk into work, but its only November and I'm already freezing my Texan butt off. I've already been seriously considering wearing nylons under my pants. What am I going to do when its January??

New Job!

An architecture firm here in Denver finally took pity on me and took me on as their newest Interior Designer!

I start tomorrow. Wish me luck. I'm going to have a seriously hard time getting up so early! I was just hired on Friday, so there was little to no time for me to start weening myself off my normal 10 am wakeup call. Its like the first day of school. I have my coffee ready, my outfit picked out, and my lunch packed.

Watch out Denver, a shiny new version of Whitney will be out to make a mark on you - starting tomorrow :)

New Belgium Brewery

We visited the New Belgium Brewery in Ft. Collins, Colorado last week. Its about an hour away from us, but completely worth the drive. It seemed like such a cool company with lots of personality, and the tour was great.

First Snow

Here are some pictures from around our neighborhood the morning after the first snow. Its almost all gone now. The trees with leaves on them were completely weighted down with snow, creating these willow-tree like canopies of frozen colorful leaves. It was cool.

Changing Seasons

We've survived our first snow! It snowed around 6" this past wednesday and today (saturday) is the first time its been well above freezing since. It was a good snow, you know, the snow-man-making kind that comes down in big flakes. It may snow again this Wednesday. I wonder if this is how its just going to be from here on out? The mountains are really pretty with snow on top. Opening weekend at the slopes was this weekend. We'll have to plan a day trip soon!

We've had company the past week and have been doing some serious exploring! I'll post pictures soon. I'm going to spend today on the couch doing nothing. :)

The Pink & Blue Project

Small Project

I started a batch of homemade vanilla extract this weekend! I've wanted to do this for a while, ever since a friend of mine in Kuwait did it. We couldn't get vanilla extract off the local economy there because it had alcohol in it. Instead they had this gross substitute called vanillin. I used it once and it gave my chocolate chip cookies yellow spots. After that I either had family ship it to me or I could sometimes find it at the military base.

Anyways, I started a batch yesterday. Its really simple if you want to try it.

1) All you need is 2-3 vanilla beans per 1 cup quality vodka

2) Cut the vanilla beans lengthwise down the center (leaving about 1" still connected on the end)

3) Combine vodka and vanilla beans in airtight container (I just added the beans to the vodka bottle)

4) Store in cool dry place for 2 months, giving the bottle a shake every once in a while

I'd really recommend shopping around for vanilla beans. The off-brand ones above were about $4 per bean. I found some at Whole Foods that were $11 per bean.

I hate snakes! I saw a little one yesterday on my run and because of it and the threat of a visit from any of its friends, I spend most of my runs staring at the ground instead of looking up at the view! When will it be too cold for them to be out sunbathing? Soon I hope.

On another, stranger, sadder, note - we have had a plague outbreak among our prairie dogs. I haven't seen too many lately and I've seen signs posted warning us about it. I don't take General, our dog, into the "open space" where the prairie dogs live. There are enough paths to walk him around our neighborhood, so the risk of him coming into contact with one doesn't worry me. Weird though, huh?

One day, when my husband and I were in Boulder, we decided to drive past one of the architecture firms that I was very interested in applying to. We input the address into the GPS and it started guiding us up this winding trail into the mountains and away from Boulder. We were expecting the climb to level off, for there to be some sort of commercial buildings, or something... but the road just kept climbing and climbing and the houses started getting bigger and bigger. Finally we reached the "firm". It was a huge house overlooking a canyon. It turned out to be the owner's house and I think its either just her or her and one other person working there.

Here are some pictures I took nearby. Can you imagine a view like this from your office? Unfortunately they weren't hiring right now...

While we were in Kuwait, the antique store I would go to had authentic handmade block stamps from India that had been used on fabric. They were so intricate and cool and I'm very much regretting that I did not get one while I was there. It was always one of those "I don't need that now, I'll get it next time" type of things.

Last year, however, one of my favorite bloggers, A Lovely Morning, posted the above picture of the holiday card she made with a block stamp and I've been wanting to try it ever since. I'm not going to reveal the stamp that I got quite yet, but I found this awesome website that sells them and had to share it with you!

So I've been reveling in all things Fall lately. The leaves are turning, the air is crisp at night, college football is in full swing, and I've already made a batch of chili. I haven't quite figured out the Colorado weather yet, but it seems to be very active. We've had 40 degree temperature swings like its no big deal.

I was told tonight by a neighbor, however, that our Fall "colors" are over. We've had a cold snap the past 2 days that brought with it wind and some light snow in some areas and apparently it will take all of our Fall "color" with it! And here I was thinking the trees still had quite a bit of changing to go! :( Hopefully she was misinformed!

Colorado Honey Wine

One of the things we bought at the Boulder Farmers Market was locally made honey wine. It was different, but really good! I learned that honey wine is just honey that has been watered down so that it will ferment, and then left alone for a year. The amount of water added determines the sweetness of the wine. Its similiar to mead, I believe, but more wine-like (??). Anyways, thought it was interesting and thought I'd share in case anyone else had never heard of Honey Wine.

The Trials of High Altitude Baking

Yesterday I tried my hand at baking for the first time since we moved to Colorado. I've made the same chocolate chip cookie recipe probably well over one hundred times, but this time they didn't turn out quite like they should. My first, and easiest mistake to fix, was to not look at the high altitude baking modification before I finished preparing the dough. Once I remembered to look for one, it was too late to remove some of the sugar but wasn't too late to add a little flour and water. I added what the prescribed and the batter still looked a lot more sticky than it should have. So I added a little more flour until it was a more appropriate consistency. The cookies ended up tasting fine in the end, but were a little flatter and crispier than normal.

Will have to try again soon! What a good challenge :)

We have our season passes to a couple of the ski resorts and we know where we're going to rent our equipment from!

Also we checked out the Boulder farmers market this weekend. It was super busy, but there was tons of cool stuff to buy. We tried some homemade soft pretzels, a local honey wine, a gyro, beef jerky, and some homemade caramel. Next time we go I'm trying the espresso and the breakfast tacos! I'm slowly eating my way across Boulder ;) The second image above is of them roasting peppers. They smelled amazing, but I didn't try one - it seemed a little early in the day for roasted peppers.

It'll be nice when it gets a little bit cooler out. I love the farmer's market in Austin, and this one definitely was a good competitor!

New places, new phone, new car! Its been a busy week! Still no word on our stuff, which was to be expected since they told us it wouldn't be here yet, but I think everyone that goes through a move hopes there will be a fluke and it all arrives early! Since we have no kitchen stuff, once we move in I'm going to have to go to the store and find some ready made meals that I can just heat. Any suggestions?

Its still hot here (nothing like Kuwait of course), but the sun seems a little more intense since we're so much higher up. I've really felt the effects of the altitude when I've been running. It'll be nice when the weather changes and the air starts to get that awesome crispness to it. Some of the stores already have Halloween stuff out. I know that's normal, but I haven't seen holiday stuff in a while so it seems weird!

I'm looking forward to being active again. I've found a master's swim class and a yoga studio nearby with reasonable prices. I've also been really wanting to get a bike and a snowboard, but we've been spending so much on all the move-related costs it feels hard to stomach a gym membership or athletic supplies too! Maybe I'll just keep running for a while.

We're Here!

We arrived in Denver on Tuesday and we've been very productive since! We've found a house and will sign a lease in the next couple of days. We're going to stay in a hotel for another week or so to give our stuff a little more time to get here (although I think spending a couple nights sleeping on the floor waiting for our furniture may be unavoidable!).

We're excited about our new place. Its a small 3 bedroom townhome with a small garden and patio area. The garden out front is probably my favorite part, although I'm a little nervous about killing all the plants. They're on an automatic drip watering system - SURELY I can't screw that up, right?! Its in a very suburban area with TONS of running/bike paths, open spaces, and views to the mountains. There's tons of retail/restaurants nearby as well.

I'm excited to get in there and start setting everything up! Our next steps are to actually move in, buy a second car, and I'll start researching Interior Design firms (wish me luck). Lots of changes!

We're loving Colorado too. Its amazing that we just get to have the Rocky Mountains as our backdrop for the next two years. The part of the city we're living in is on the outskirts of town and is in suburban heaven. After living in Kuwait and missing the little things like walking outside, having conveniences such as a Walgreens on the corner, and as granola as it sounds... just being around nature, is all pretty exciting! I'm going to be Mrs. Suburbia for a while :)

I'm not neglecting my blog intentionally, I promise. The above picture is one of my many excuses why I've been bad at updating the past month! As you can see, everything was packed, and we have officially left Kuwait for the last time! I stopped in Tampa on my way home to visit my grandparents and aunt & uncle, then arrived in Texas on Sunday where I've been spending time with my mom. I'll head to Temple soon to see my dad then bop around Austin/San Antonio to see more friends. Too many people to see in not enough time! We drive (with our pets!!) up to Colorado on Monday! Wish us luck. We haven't even booked a hotel yet! Eek!

Activity Overload!

So we're back! We got in a week ago and life has been crazy ever since! I'm overdue on a post and this one isn't going to count for much since its 2:30 in the morning. Italy was amazing - to say the least. I could definitely live there! We did SO much and saw SO much. Our pictures, despite the fact that I took 1500, still don't capture it!

But now, back to reality....The movers came on Thursday to pack up our home. Our stuff is once again somewhere in limbo between Kuwait and the US. We've moved into a hotel and have been busy wrapping things up, celebrating the birthday of a very special someone (moi!), and trying to see all our friends as much as possible before we set off for the last time to the US.

We're looking forward to this next adventure and to leave Kuwait, but am very sad to leave behind friends. Hopefully we'll all end up in the same spot again one day!

I'll post more on Italy soon. Its literally taken me this long just to upload, organize, & edit all of them in between all the other stuff we have going on.

While driving in Normandy, we saw these cool signs that highlighted the exits for historical sights in the area. I know its silly, but I thought they were pretty cool! I like that they actually put some effort into it rather than just writing the name on a road sign. I guess that's France though. They seem to put more value in public artwork!

Our time in Kuwait is winding down and we're starting to prepare for another big move - this time back to the States! We're leaving earlier than expected, which has its drawbacks and benefits. We had wanted to do some more traveling, we're very sad to leave some close friends, and our home here was just starting to feel like a home. But we're very lucky to be moving back and our new location in Colorado has the potential to be pretty cool. There's tons to do and I'm looking forward to making up for all the time I've spent indoors here in Kuwait by being outside as much as possible in Colorado! I'm also looking forward to getting our pets back. I can't wait to walk my dog!

I'm debating whether or not to continue my blog. I'm leaning towards keeping it, although I'll no longer be abroad (for now anyways). I'll just have to see how it goes and see if the little bubble that I live in stays interesting enough to blog about :)

We leave this week for our next European vacation. I can't wait to share pictures!

We spent several hours wandering around the louvre, and I still only feel like we scratched the surface. I read somewhere that it would take 9 months to see everything! We finally had to quit though when our feet wouldn't go any further. We weren't able to make it into every collection, which I was a little bummed about, but I knew ahead of time it was unrealitic to try.

I made cinnamon rolls from scratch today for the first time. I exercised some restraint since it's 3:00 in the afternoon right now and forced myself to put them in the freezer to bake in the morning, versus diving right in.

It was a fairly simple recipe though (and freez-able), so I thought I'd share! It's yet another Pioneer Woman favorite. I recently bought her cookbook. I know that most of the recipes are on her website as well, but the book is much handier than bringing your laptop in the kitchen. Plus so many of her recipes are now household favorites in our home, that I felt like I should buy her book and show my support!

Paris Continued: St. Genevieve

When will it end!? Is that what you're thinking? Not yet is the answer. There is so much to see in Paris and I still have to share two more experiencese with you (not counting this one)!

This is the church of St. Genevieve. We just stumbled upon it as we walked up to the Pantheon (which we weren't able to go into). I loved all the patterns and details on the interior. St. Genevieve is credited for saving Paris from attack, by diverting Attila the Hun away from the city through prayer. Here's a little more on St. Genevieve, if you're interested.

We took a day trip to Normany while we were in France to see the D-Day Memorial. It was a quick trip out there and back, but it was cool to see something besides the city. It was a little strange how quickly we were able to rent a car and just start cruising through the countryside! The memorial was very sad, but amazing to see. It's beautifully maintained with a view of Omaha Beach in the background.

When we visited Notre Dame there was a service taking place and they were burning incense, so my camera struggled a little with the smoke & the dim light. It was amazing just the same though. It kind of felt weird to be observing people as they sat in church though, like they were on display too. The entrance was probably my favorite part.

This place was pretty cool. Its a huge complex with various museums. The coolest though is the part that houses Napoleon's tomb. I had seen pictures before of this in college and though it looked so small, but in person its huge. The images of the armor are from a special exhibit they had on display that showed the design, sketches and finished product of medieval armor. Its amazing how intricate it was. I decided that in another life, this may have been what I did :)

J'adore Paris!

We got back into town last night and are getting back to our routine today. It was a quick trip to Paris, but we packed so much in! I still have to sort through the hundreds of photos that I took, but will share more soon. We saw SO much. After our trip to Prague, which we were lucky enough to spend 6 days in, I felt like I could really say I "did" that city. With all the walking we did, I'm satisfied to be able to say the same about Paris. My feet haven't hurt that bad in a long time!

The only thing we didn't get to do, that I'd still like to some day, is see Versailles & go to a winery outside of the city. We explored the central part of Paris thoroughly over the course of 4 days (although I could go to the Louvre several more times) and took a day trip out to Normandy to see the D-Day Memorial.

I came across this recipe a while ago, but dug it out this weekend. Its brilliant and so simple. Its a recipe for a dry mix of pancakes. You make a bunch and then you basically have your own homemade bisquick, so that whenever you want pancakes you just add an egg, a cup of milk & some butter and there you go! I like to put the dry mix in one of those gallon ziploc bags and write what I'm supposed to add on the outside of it. Its so easy, its kind of silly we've all been spending money on pancake mix all these years!

While searching for this recipe again, I was looking on Pioneer Woman and she uses cake flour in her pancake recipe. They don't sell cake flour here, so I haven't tried the recipe myself, but I thought it was interesting and thought I'd pass it on as well!

We had a group of friends over for brunch this morning. It was such a nice break to our normal routine. Plus then I had the rest of the day to do nothing

Next week is my last week at my job. I'm pretty excited about it. My husband and I are starting to somwhat wrap up our time here in Kuwait and I had just finished a big project at work. It's a good time to make a clean break. I'm looking forward to some time off. I can check off "Worked in the Middle East" from my list of accomplishments and can now focus on squeezing some more exploring/experiences/traveling into our remaining time here.

We've planned a spur of the moment trip to Paris in the next couple of weeks. I'm super excited. I've always wanted to go. I just wish I had some more time to brush up on my French! More to come!

Scuba!

We're scuba certified! We've been working on getting the certification and finished up our open water dives this weekend. The first day was beautiful - well as beautiful as it can be for the Arabian Gulf. The water isn't very clear, but there are some tropical fish and coral - plus a sunken ship that was kind of cool. Today, however, we had rough seas. We did finish, but nearly everyone lost their breakfast several over the course of the morning (I was somehow able to hold it together thankfully). It was a rough day, but we finished.

We got very lucky yesterday and saw a Whale Shark! We were able to swim very close to it. We're told its a once in a lifetime experience, that we got lucky to see without trying and on our first open water dive. Divers go looking for them and sometimes still can't see one. They're the largest living fish species. Here's some more information on them, if you're interested - click here.

Camel Races

We saw the last camel race of the season while we had family in town. It was an interesting sight, despite the long wait before the races started. The track was way out in the desert with a viewing building that seemed kind of like a men's club and a track. No one seemed to know what time the races were starting but everyone, with the exception of us, seemed patient to just hang out and wait. Here are some pictures that my husband and mother-in-law were able to snap from the edge of the race.

A Grand Experience

Our family is in town and we've been showing off the sights of Kuwait. We're hoping to see some camels today, but with our busy day yesterday (as you can see above), I'm letting everyone sleep in :)

The pictures above don't do the space justice at all. It was a huge huge room with a very large round dome in the center, supported by 4 columns. The script text around the room blended in with the intricate mosaics (my favorite part of islamic design, besides maybe the onion dome shape). It was a cool experience to see inside, even though I had to put a head scarf on to go in.

Where Does It Stop?

The next world's tallest building has been approved for construction in Saudi Arabia. The proposed Kingdom Tower will be over a mile high, surpassing even the next tallest building that is under construction in Dubai. It will take visitors a 12 minute elevator ride to arrive at the top.

After having visited the current world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, it makes me wonder how this race for the tallest building is going to end. Soon visitors will be required to wear oxygen masks as the buildings stick out into space!

Although American architects are playing roles in all of these monsters, I'm glad we're not trying to compete on our home turf (at least to my knowledge). Who needs it? Saudi Arabia apparently.

We've been busily preparing for family to come visit us in Kuwait! The house has been cleaned and re-cleaned several times, shopping lists have been met, and vacation time has been taken. Its the first time we've taken off work and not left the country. It'll be nice and relaxed and hopefully I'll return to work rested! I'm going to try to get some good pictures this week as we visit some of Kuwait's highlights.

It's been a good weekend, but a busy one! I was asked to photograph a friend and her son this weekend and I think they turned out pretty well! It was great practice with my camera and a good experience overall. It of course helps when your subject is cute doing just about anything though :) We're off to do our first scuba lessons today. I wasn't able to get all my reading for it done, so keep your fingers crossed I can wing it!
